For more than thirty years, the principals of Interisk have been collecting trade publications, textbooks, manuscripts, references, policy forms and various other documents that provide insights on all aspects of the property-casualty insurance industry during the 20th century. Although the collection is not exhaustive, many of the items archived in this collection are not easily obtained. A few of the more interesting items in this library include:
One of the most valuable aspects of this collection for attorneys is the ability of the research staff to locate documents that give a "snapshot" of a particular topic at a particular point in time. Since insurance policy forms and industry practices are subject to change, up-to-date books and articles often fail to address the unique coverage problems involved in a lawsuit over policies issued 10, 20 or even 50 years ago. We have performed extensive research on coverage practices and limits, from the 1920s through the present day.
The research library is utilized on most Interisk engagements, but it is also available as a stand-alone service to clients who do not need other Interisk services. Research problems may be addressed at the rate of $75.00 per hour plus out-of-pocket expenses (e.g., photocopy service, express delivery charges). There is a minimum charge of $150.00 for each research assignment.
- Documents related to the history of U.S. liability insurance, from its origins in 1886.
- Policy forms and drafting history documents dating back to the 1930s and 1940s.
- Extensive files concerning the birth and evolution of commercial general liability (CGL) coverage.
- Research files comparing umbrella liability coverage forms and tracking the history of umbrella liability coverage.
- Research files on captive insurer organization and domiciles.
- Multiple editions of important texts pointing to the industry's customs and practices at various points in time.
