Stanley L. Lipshultz, J.D., CPCU
Stanley L. Lipshultz is a well-known expert witness and insurance litigation consultant with more than 45 years of insurance industry experience. He began his career working in the claims department for an insurance carrier, and then became a lawyer specializing in insurance defense work for agents, brokers, and insurers. As part of his practice, Stanley served as an arbitrator and mediator of insurance matters, and now serves as an expert witness and litigation consultant. Stanley has served as an independent consultant for Interisk Limited since 1999.

Stanley’s career began as a claims representative and liability supervisor at the Insurance Company of North America. From there, he worked as a government loan specialist for the Federal National Mortgage Association, and as an associate attorney at Friedman & Lipshultz, where he handled litigation involving personal injury, property damage, commercial and personal property losses, as well as subrogation and collections on behalf of various insurers. He then co-founded the law firm Lipshultz and Hone Chartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he spent more than 27 years in insurance defense, initially focusing on products liability and warranty claims. He also handled property and casualty claims, insurance coverage litigation, and examinations under oath on behalf of various insurers, as well as representing insurers in direct suits brought against them involving coverage disputes. Stanley began representing insurance agents and brokers and real estate agents in 1978 and developed a substantial trial practice focused on professional liability and coverage issues. He also has served as a consultant to the Maryland Insurance Administration.
Stanley earned a bachelor’s degree in political science at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and his law degree at the American University’s Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. Stanley’s professional credentials include a CPCU (chartered property casualty underwriter) designation earned in 1989. He has been a long-time member of the Consulting, Litigation, and Expert Witness (CLEW) Governing Committee and served as the CLEW section newsletter editor and chairman. He also has been a member of the National Board of Governors, Executive Committee, Audit Committee, and served as chairman of the Diversity Committee.
Stanley is a licensed personal lines insurance agent in Maryland. He has bar admissions in Maryland, District of Columbia, the U.S. Supreme Court, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth and Sixth Circuits.
Stanley teaches and has written extensively about all types of property and casualty insurance areas, including errors and omissions, the legal environment of risk management and insurance, and professional liability.
